August Revolution highlighted

Celebrations of the August Revolution, record high gold prices, and combating hand-foot-mouth disease are among the top stories of the past week.

Vietnam’s August Revolution marked

66 years have passed since Vietnam’s historical autumn of 1945. With aspirations for independence and freedom, the entire population rose up to struggle for national independence under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh.

Vietnam’s August Revolution marked the collapse of old colonialism in the world and set an example for other colonized countries in Asia and Africa to revolt against their regimes.

September 2, 1945 was  one of the most important milestones in Vietnamese history when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence to establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

On the occasion of the August Revolution, major daily newspapers ran editorials highlighting the great significance of the revolutionary victory, which led to the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the first independent State of workers and peasants in Southeast Asia.

Urgent measures taken to combat hand-foot-mouth disease

In order to deal with the spread of life threatening hand-foot-mouth disease among children,  Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked all ministries and related agencies to speed up efforts to control the disease.

The PM urged the Chairmen of provincial and municipal People’s Committees to direct communication to encourage people to take preventive measures in their families and throughout the community, especially in kindergartens.

Gold prices hit new record high

Domestic gold prices hit a new record high of VND47.15 million per tael in Hanoi and VND47.17 per tael in Ho Chi Minh City on August 19.

According to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the rising price of gold in the domestic market was attributed to fluctuating gold prices on the world market. The SBV said it would intervene to prevent chaos in the gold market.

Pakistan violence

Hundreds of people being killed and injured in attacks in Pakistan over the past week has raised international concern about the political instability of the South Asian country.

On August 19, At least 50 people were killed and over 100 others were injured in a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in the northwest of the country.

According to local authorities, a teenage suicide bomber with 10 kilos of explosives blew himself up while hundreds of people were offering Friday prayers inside the mosque.

More than 30 people were killed earlier in three days of violence in the northern Pakistani city of Karachi.

France and Germany discuss closer euro zone integration

To deal with the European public debt crisis, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met on August 16 to discuss far-reaching plans for closer euro zone integration.
