Welcoming the US delegation’s working visit, the host official expressed his belief that the trip will contribute to enhancing the comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the US.

He thanked the US for supporting Vietnam in the international arena recently and appreciated its efforts in addressing post-war consequences like the Agent Orange issue and the detoxification of toxic chemicals.

The two countries have had very good initial coordination in defence and security, he noted, adding that their defence ministers met and signed a protocol on defence basing on which both sides have carried out many activities such as rescue exercises at sea and training for Vietnam’s coast guards.

NA Vice Chairman Ty said the countries need to increase mutual visits at all levels while their parliaments’ committees should boost sharing experience in law making and supervision. The two sides also need to strengthen trade cooperation to promote their economic development.

He emphasised that the US Embassy in Vietnam is a bridge helping foster all-round cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, Gardner said his country wants to step up relations with Vietnam in all aspects in the future.

He affirmed that he will continue seeking bilateral and multilateral opportunities to remove trade and investment barriers between the countries and promote Vietnam’s role in the international arena, especially in the ASEAN region.

The US is ready to support and share information in training for the rescue and coast guard forces of Vietnam, he added.

The Senator also asked the Southeast Asian nation to keep close coordination with the US Embassy to tackle trade barriers in order to provide favourable conditions for businesses of both countries.
