Vietnam enjoys increasing trade surplus with Canada

Vietnam enjoyed a trade surplus of nearly US$3.089 billion with Canada as of the end of November, 2016, an increase of 24.6% against the same time in 2015, according to Statistics Canada.

In the period, the two-way trade value reached US$3.826 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.6%. It comprised Vietnam’s exports worth US$3.457 billion, up 16.4% and its import value of US$368 million, a drop of 25%.

According to Hoang Anh Dung, Vietnam's commercial counsellor in Canada, Vietnam leads the ASEAN nations in export value to Canada. 

It was followed by Thailand with US$2.17 billion, a drop of 3.2%; Malaysia with US$1.789 billion, down 7%; Indonesia with US$1.134 billion, down 7.6%; the Philippines with US$934 million, down 9.8%; and Singapore with US$666 million, down 3.5%.

Canada spent US$1.174 billion on Vietnam’s electronic products and accessories, up 56.5%; US$355 million on footwear, up 15.5%; US$108 million on sportswear, up 25%; and US$54 million on children toys, up 24%, among others.

Among Vietnam’s export goods, mobile phone recorded the highest increase by 67.9%, to US$827 million.
