After four consecutive draws, chess player Le Quang Liem won a memorable victory over defending Dortmund champion Ponomariov in the fifth game of the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting on July 25.

Liem took the initiative and he moved first. However, Ponomariov performed so well that it took Liem 71 moves to defeat the former champion.

With this triumph, Liem scored three points to place second in the tournament’s tally, after Vladimir Kramnik, who had a score of 4.5 points.

After a break on July 26, the matches will resume on July 27, when Liem will meet Germany’s number two player, G. Meier, with whom he tied in the opening game.
