Le Quang Liem wins Spice Cup 2011
Vietnam's top chess player, Le Quang Liem, won the champion title at the 2011 Spice Cup in the US after a decisive victory against Cuba’s Leinier Dominguez on the morning of October 26.
Grandmaster Liem’s position was threatened before he made his first move. Although he led his Cuban rival by one point, German Goerg Meier was on level pegging with Liem, which meant the Vietnamese star had to win his game against the Cuban to nab top spot.
Liem had already defeated Leinier Dominguez in an earlier tournament in Casablanca.
Winning the final, Liem received 17 points after ten games, followed by Leinier Dominguez and Goerg Meier, both on 15.
