VOV.VN - Hordes of local residents and visitors flocked to Then Pa village of Tam Duong district in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau to watch horse riders show off their skills in an annual horse race to celebrate Vietnam’s National Day (September 2).

The participating jockeys all come from communes of Tam Duong district, where a large number of Mong ethnic people live.

All the racehorses are indigenous ones raised and trained by the Mong people.

Though the horses are not all, they are quite strong enough to take part in a long race.

The horse racing track has been erected in an open space in Then Pa village of Ta Leng commune which is surrounded by terraced fields of ripe rice during the harvest season.

The horses are required to run seven lapses at a length of 1,500 in total.

This year’s race has attracted 35 racehorses to compete in five qualifying rounds. Five first and second placed horse riders are selected to enter the semi- and final rounds.

The riders are farmers, sitting on horses without a saddle and pedals, only reins made of braided rope.

When the competition is on, the horse riders are cheered by people and tourists standing along both sides of the racetrack.

In the past, the Mong people could not do without horses because they helped people carry goods every time they went to the market, carry firewood, and carry agricultural products from the forest and fields home.

Sung A Pao, head of the Tam Duong District administration, says the local competition has been derived from spontaneous horse races at the previous fair.

Up to now, Tam Duong district has restored the tournament to preserve and develop indigenous horse breeds.

This is also an activity to preserve and promote local Mong ethnic culture in association with tourism development.

At the closing ceremony, the Organizing Committee has awarded first, second and third prices to winners of the competition.
