NA approves senior posts
ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, abnormalities in purchasing farm produce, and the tragedies in Norway were prominent last week.
Nguyen Sinh Hung elected 13th National Assembly Chairman
The 13th Vietnam National Assembly (NA) convened its first session on July 21 to decide on a series of important matters.
With 457 votes, accounting for 91.4 percent, Nguyen Sinh Hung was elected as the new National Assembly Chairman. Four NA Vice Chairpersons were also selected including Mr Uong Chu Luu, Mr Huynh Ngoc Son, Ms Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Ms Tong Thi Phong.
The NA also elected the 12 members of its Standing Committee.
Abnormalities found in production and trade of farm produce
The Chinese paid Vietnamese farmers a high price to plant potatoes. Chinese traders also tried to purchase a large amount of cassava and rushed to buy pepper, not caring if it was dry or old.
The same thing happened with tea in northern Vietnam.
Analysts consider these practices will lower the status of Vietnam farm produce.
ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and related meetings
The 44th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM44) opened in Bali, Indonesia, on July 19 under the theme of ‘the ASEAN Community in the Global Community of Nations’.
This year’s meeting was ‘hotter’ than usual and attracted more global attention due to recent tension and disputes regarding the East Sea.
- ASEAN plays central role in regional development
- Vietnam, Japan hold bilateral dialogue on AMM-44 sidelines
- Vietnam attends 18th ASEAN Regional Forum
Double tragedy in Norway
July 22 is being called ‘dark Friday’ in Norway as it was hit by two consecutive shocking and bloody attacks: a bomb blast near a government building and a gunman in a fake police uniform gunning down people at a youth summer camp, leaving more than 80 dead.
The international community vehemently condemned the terrorist acts and sent condolences to the northern European country for its losses.
