The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a banquet in Hanoi on August 7 to foreign ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic corps to mark the 42nd anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem appreciated the effective cooperation and great support given by the international community to ASEAN and its member states over the past years.

Regional cooperation and ASEAN are part and parcel of Vietnam’s foreign policy, stressed Mr Khiem.

He said that Vietnam has taken part in the ASEAN cooperation process in a proactive and responsible spirit, helping to build a united and integrated bloc.

As an active and responsible member, Vietnam has made many substantial contributions to the association’s solidarity and development since it joined the bloc in July 1995, said Mr Khiem.

He told foreign delegates that it will be a great honour for Vietnam when it starts to assume the role of ASEAN President in 2010. He expressed his hope that Vietnam will receive more assistance and support from other ASEAN countries and international friends to fulfil the duty.
