ASEAN foreign ministers convened the first session of the ASEAN Political Security Community Council and a meeting of the ASEAN Coordination Council in Pattaya City, Thailand, on April 10.

They agreed to identify priority areas and establish mechanisms for coordination among ASEAN member countries to contribute to the building of an ASEAN community.

They discussed preparations for meetings between ASEAN and its key partners, including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the United Nations, as well as for the East Asia summit, scheduled for April 11-12.

They reviewed the implementation of documents passed by ASEAN leaders at the 14th regional summit, including the ASEAN Charter and the building of the ASEAN community.

Addressing the meeting, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem praised the important role the ASEAN Political Security Community Council and the ASEAN Coordination Council have played in enacting the bloc’s charter and building the single community.

He stressed the need for ASEAN to immediately implement priority programmes and plans outlined in the ASEAN Political Security Community’s blueprint in order to promote regional peace and stability as well as improving the bloc’s image and position in the region and the world.

The same day, the Vietnamese deputy PM had bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of several countries to discuss measures to boost bilateral ties as well as issues of mutual concern to be tabled during conferences in Pattaya this time.
