They have subsequently asked the local authorities to reply to him in line with the law, said a spokesman on April 28.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Dung made the statement in reply to questions from foreign journalists asking if Catholics from the parish of Thai Ha have once again got involved in a land dispute, as they claim ownership of the land.
The petition from Father Phung asked for the halting of a construction project on a lot of land by Ba Giang Lake and the return of the illegally occupied land to Thai Ha parish.
“Only Father Phung, not ordinary Catholics from Thai Ha church as speculated, has submitted the petition,” said the spokesperson.
The Hanoi People’s Committee has asked the administration in Dong Da precinct, where the Thai Ha church is located, to seriously consider the petition and reply to Father Phung in line with the law.
The Hanoi People’s Committee has urged investors to stop the construction project and asked Dong Da precinct and Quang Trung ward administrations to tighten up land management, maintain the status quo of the construction site and ensure public order and security.
The website of the Vietnamese Redemptionist Church on April 25 ran a communiqué issued by Father Nguyen Van Khai, a spokesperson for the Thai Ha church.
The communiqué deals with non-religious issues, tarnishes the regime, distorts the truth, undermines national unity and had enticed Catholics to go to Thai Ha church at 18h30’ on April 25 to worship.
The “Communique” has run counter to official announcements, which have a constructive content, made by the Episcopal Council of the Vietnamese Catholic Church.
