State President Nguyen Minh Triet asked the northern province of Bac Giang to make a breakthrough in poverty reduction during a visit on April 8.

While working with the provincial authorities, Mr Triet pointed out that Bac Giang’s GDP growth rate fell to 4.3 percent in the first quarter of this year, causing more difficulties for poor and low-income households which now make up 18 percent of its population.

Bac Giang should introduce solutions for supporting the poor and ensuring social welfare amidst economic difficulties, said Mr Triet.

He said that the province should take full advantage of the increasing inflow of investment by formulating transparent policies and focusing on administrative reform and human resource training to attract investors.

The President underlined the need to build strong Party organisations and administrations, considering this a vital task for local authorities and Party members.

Mr Triet also visited the provincial boarding school which has trained more than 1,000 students of different ethnic groups over the past 10 years. Last year, 57 percent of its students passed tertiary entrance examinations. He also visited soldiers and revolutionary veterans in the province.

During the past three years, Bac Giang has achieved an annual GDP growth rate of 9.5 percent. All of its communes have doctors on duty at medical centres while 42 percent of schools meet national standards.
