Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh on May 5 paid a visit to well-known General Vo Nguyen Giap, who was the first commander-in-chief of the Vietnam People’s Army and the Commander of the Dien Bien Phu campaign against the French colonialists.
The event coincided with other activities to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the victory at Dien Bien Phu valley in northwestern Vietnam in 1954.
On behalf of the Vietnamese Party and State, Mr Manh affirmed that the Vietnamese people will always remember and highly value Mr Giap’s great services to the Party’s revolutionary cause, including the Dien Bien Phu battle, which ‘shook the earth’ and inspired colonized peoples all over the world to struggle for independence.
Mr Manh expressed his wish that the former commander would remain healthy and make further contributions to national construction and defence.
General Giap and his wife were moved at the sentiments and said that the Dien Bien Phu victory came from the joint efforts of the entire Party, army and people under the leadership of the Party and late President Ho Chi Minh.
