Poland is ready to provide US$280 million in preferential credits to help Vietnam develop its shipbuilding industry and other sectors, said Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

The FM told Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at a reception in Hanoi on May 25 that in the context of the current global economic crisis, Poland and Vietnam should strengthen their friendly relationship for mutual benefit.

Meanwhile, PM Dung said that both countries should work closer together in economics, trade, tourism, education and science-technology.

He welcomed Poland’s decision to double the amount of scholarships it provides to Vietnamese students and expressed hope that the European country will continue to support its Vietnamese community to integrate into the local communities there.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem held talks with the Polish FM who is in Hanoi for the 9th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Mr Khiem confirmed that Vietnam wants to strengthen its friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Poland, especially in areas where it is strong such as shipbuilding, mining, oil&gas, food processing, education and training, and the restoration of historical buildings.

Both host and guest noted with satisfaction the increasing amount of trade between the two countries, which hit US$640 million last year, much higher than the target of US$500 million set for 2010.

They said that both countries should take practical measures to disburse the US$280 million in preferential credits offered by Poland to Vietnam.

They agreed to sign a new protocol on cooperation between the two Foreign Ministries to boost bilateral ties and increase cooperation in international forums.
