UN asked to provide continued support for Vietnam in natural disaster response

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked the UN to continue supporting the nation in enhancing its resilience, responding to natural disasters, adapting to climate change, and converting to clean energy.

The Government leader held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Vientiane, Laos, on October 11.

The meeting saw PM Chinh offer his congratulations on the great success of the Future Summit recently held in New York, expressing great appreciation for the role of the Secretary-General and UN agencies in maintaining peace, stability, narrowing the gap, and promoting development globally.

He therefore thanked the UN for its valuable co-operation and support for the country’s renovation and development over the past nearly 40 years.

Affirming that the nation values ​​and backs the central role of the UN in global governance, the Vietnamese chief emphasized that the country will continue to support multilateralism and international law, contribute to global efforts to promote dialogue and co-operation, and effectively participate in UN peacekeeping mission.

For his part, the UN chief congratulated the Vietnamese side on its socio-economic achievements; assessing that Vietnam serves as a model of peace and sustainable development, “the star of ASEAN” which contributes to raising the voice and role of developing countries.

The Secretary-General said he hopes to closely work alongside the nation to implement the important results achieved at the Future Summit, while also hoping that the country will continue to take the lead in efforts to promote peace, stability, inclusive, and sustainable development globally.

He also highly agreed with PM Chinh's vision and "all-people, comprehensive" approach in solving global issues such as natural disasters, climate change, population aging, and resource depletion.

The two sides concurred to further strengthen ASEAN-UN relations and ASEAN's bridging role in promoting dialogue and collaboration efforts in the context of complicated developments occurring around the world and the region with many emerging contradictions and conflicts.

On this occasion, PM Chinh thanked the UN and its member agencies for actively co-ordinating with and supporting Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of typhoon Yagi. He respectfully invited the UN Secretary-General to visit Vietnam, with the invitation being graciously accepted. The UN chief said that he would arrange to visit Vietnam in the near future.
