Vietnam, international community call for an end to US embargo against Cuba
VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, has called on the United States to immediately end the embargo and remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism moving towards normalizing relations between the two countries.

The 79th session of the UN General Assembly discussed the topic on the necessity of ending the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the US against Cuba from October 29 to October 30 at the UN Headquarters in New York.
At the meeting, many countries and groups of states expressed concern that the longest embargo in history imposed by the US has had a severe negative socio-economic impact on Cuba, especially causing serious and long-term damage to its people and vulnerable groups.
Countries therefore called on the US to immediately end the embargo against Cuba and to remove Cuba from the state sponsor of terrorism list
In his address, Ambassador Giang emphasized that the embargo violates international law and goes against the basic principles and principles of the UN Charter, not only causing difficulties for the Cuban people, but also preventing other countries from providing assistance for the Caribbean nation, especially humanitarian and medical assistance.
As a country that has suffered severe consequences due to embargoes, the Vietnamese side opposes all forms of unilateral imposition and embargoes against sovereign nations, the Vietnamese diplomat went on to say.
Sharing the difficulties faced by the Cuban people, Ambassador Giang called on the US to immediately end the embargo and to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, thereby moving towards normalizing relations between the two countries on the basis of equality, reciprocity, respect for each other's national sovereignty, and political independence. Vietnam stands ready to contribute to promoting dialogue and consolidating trust in this process, he added.
On this occasion, the Vietnamese representative reaffirmed the close co-operation, friendship, and solidarity with the Cuban people.
The UN General Assembly also adopted the Resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the US against Cuba”, with 187 votes in favor, two against (Israel and the US), and one abstention (Moldova).
Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has held an annual discussion on the topic “The necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the US against Cuba" and passed a resolution of the same name with the participation and support of a large number of UN member nations.
