The Vietnam National Mekong Committee and the Mekong River Commission in coordination with the Cambodian Department of Fisheries organised a ceremony to release 50,000 Giant Barb fish in Hong Ngu district, Dong Thap province on September 15.
The releasing took place 5km from the Cambodian border. Representatives said the event aimed to increase the importance of fishery in the Mekong River region and promote seafood trade across borders.
At the ceremony, representatives from Cambodia and Vietnam spoke of the protection of fishery, as well as cooperation between the two countries to defend valuable fish, which are easily harmed by the environment’s bad affects.
The Giant Barb fish is known to be the largest freshwater fish in the South East Asian region. The fish has an average length of 5-7cm and it can grow to a weight of 1kg in one year to 7kg in three years.
