The report was handed over to the university on May 11 by Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Mitsuo Sakaba.

Emperor Akihito is a renowned and passionate ichthyologist, or an expert on fish.     

In 1976, as part of the Japanese Emperor’s research into Vietnamese fish (at that time he was Crown Prince of Japan), a new species of goby was discovered in a tributary of the Can Tho River.

Earlier, copies of his report had been sent to the departments of Natural Sciences in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Universities.

Ambassador Mitsuo Sabaka said that this was not only a scientific project, but a symbol of Vietnamese – Japanese friendship. His report recently appeared in a major scientific paper.
