A delegation from the National Assembly’s Committee for External Relations led by its Chairman Nguyen Van Son visited the European Union (EU), the European Parliament (EP) in Belgium and the UK Parliament from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4.
The delegation met with the EP Vice Chairman, representatives of the EU’s trade and diplomatic agencies and EP parliamentarians’ groups keen to strengthen links with ASEAN countries.
In the UK, the delegation met with members of parliament, representatives from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
During the meetings, both hosts and guests discussed Vietnam’s recent socio-economic achievements, especially in reducing poverty and protecting human rights.
Officials from the EU, EP and UK Parliament said that they wanted to strengthen ties with Vietnam in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, and speed up the negotiations on a Free Trade Area (FTA) agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
